The creation of BASICS Products, and The BASICS wallet.

A couple of years ago Jacob and I had a meeting with his older brother Matt. We sat in a room all spitting out ideas because we wanted to create a business. We were all in school at the time so we started brainstorming ideas where we could make money on the side with as little work as possible. We had some good ideas, but ultimately nothing ever came from that. We all went our separate ways after graduation and it kind of fizzled out.

Then one day early in the spring Jacob called me and invited my wife and I to a Utah Jazz game. I didn't realize it at the time but this would be the beginning of BASICS Products. Jacob and I started swapping ideas again. I don't even remember who the Jazz played or if we won, but I remember our exciting conversation. By the end of that Jazz game Jacob and I were determined to launch a Kickstarter together by the end of the summer. We started collaborating and trying to decide what would be our first product. We both enjoy the idea of minimalism and were very impressed with how well wallets like the Crabby wallet, the TGT or Tight wallet, and the Slim wallet did on Kickstarter. Then we found this article https://www.kickstarter.com/stories/wallets and we realized that a wallet would be the perfect first step. What we didn't realize is that we would actually create a wallet that would make such an impact.

Coming up with the wallet was a fun process. We wanted to create a wallet that solved the problems associated with traditional wallets, and offered these convenient features:

  • Slim
  • Durable
  • Functional / Easy access to ALL cards
  • Ability to hold as many or as few cards as wanted
  • Looks classy

We looked closely at other wallets on Kickstarter and played around with multiple designs to get to our final prototype. The process involved 30 + prototypes and remaking and refining every inch of our final design. It was an exciting moment when we saw what the pull tab was capable of and how it gave us access to all of the cards. Once we had the final wallet we had to come up with a name. We enlisted the help of our friends and family and after hours and hours we could not decide. Instead of naming the wallet, we decided to create a brand and thus BASICS Products was born.

We have innovative ideas and hope to revolutionize how people think and use products every day. We are very pleased with the response we have received from our 6,000 + backers on Kickstarter and hope that anyone else who wants to be part of the BASICS brand will continue to give us feedback and make BASICS Products great!
